Rhamnus catharticus - Common Buckthorn
Hedgerow shrub or small tree, multi-branched and thorny. Small flowers in spring and black berries in autumn. Good on chalk and limestone soils.
Rhamnus frangula - Alder Buckthorn
Attractive shrubby tree. Shiny green-yellow leaves with red-pink berries in autumn. Good on damp sites and marshy areas.
